What can I say? A pizza needs a good sauce. For my pizza sauce recipe I was inspired by eating leftover sauce out of the packet from Lunchables when I was a kid. It might not be a very glamorous jumping off point, but damn if this isn’t a super tasty red sauce!
- 7 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper (optional)
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
- 1 28 oz can tomato puree/sauce
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp dried basil
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp dries thyme
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
In a large pan/medium sauce pan heat the oil over medium-high heat. Saute the garlic and crushed red pepper until fragrant, about 90 seconds. Add the balsamic vinegar and reduce for one minute.
Add the canned tomato, tomato paste, sugar, and herbs. Bring up to a boil and reduce heat to low. Allow to simmer for 20 minutes. Season to taste and allow to cool before applying to pizza dough.
